Student Testimonial
Grace Lutheran Church is in Northwest Des Moines at the corner of Urbandale Avenue and 52nd Street. Their congregation started about 100 years ago in the 1920’s. 42 charter members officially organized the church on June 30th, 1927. The members started coming together a few years before that in a rented house across the street from where the church currently stands today.
As a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Grace Lutheran Church welcomes and embraces individuals who are LGBTQ+. Despite being members of a progressive denomination, they share many of the same values most Christian churches hold dear. As their savior Jesus taught them, they believe they must love one another and live in community. They also believe in the importance of Discipleship which to them means striving for peace and justice for the entire planet. They are also a community that believes in the power of prayer. Prayer, after all, is their “connection and communication with God.”
Their community also has numerous small groups that meet regularly in addition to meeting every Sunday this congregation. Their children and youth groups are divided into five groups: 0 – 3-year-olds, preschoolers, elementary kiddos, middle schoolers, and high schoolers. If you’re into music, their congregation has a choir, and handbell choir, and a brass group. They also host two guilds (quilters and alter), a floral garden, a men’s group, and a women’s group. These groups meet at different times and more information about them and when they meet can be found on their website.
