Follow along in the prayer books, while the service is sung in Hebrew, the books are written in English

Out of respect for the tradition, men are asked to wear the Kippah (there is a bin of these “hats” by the front door), and women can choose to wear one too

Be ready to be asked to read an English prayer, they like to involve newcomers.

Student Testimonial

The Tifereth Israel Synagogue’s current location was established in 1929. However, this is the second congregation. The first one, established in 1901, which was on 3rd and Crocker. It was a space that they quickly outgrew, so they moved to a new area at Pole Boulevard which is where they still are today. They realized that their new location needed updates, so pieces were added to help modernize parts of the synagogue and keep other parts more traditional. The screen that separates men and women was removed, and the permission of female and LGBTQ rabbis was put in place.

The Tifereth Israel Synagogue is for Conservative Judaism, which is kind of between Orthodox and Reform. It uses modern, newer elements as well as more traditional practices. A mix of Hebrew and English will be recited during services and Torah readings.

The main services provided by the Tifereth Israel Synagogue are the Shabbat services, the weekday Minyan, and specialty holiday services. Every Friday, the Shabbat services begin at 6 p.m. and 9:30 a.m. on Saturdays. Sometimes they even offer Mishpacha, or family Shabbat for kids with animated storytelling. Afterward, a potluck is usually held for all of the families that attended. Acoustic Shabbat is also offered from time to time. This is when the service is more of a musical celebration with songs and the occasional local musician. The Minyan service is every Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. in person and on Zoom. It is only a 45-minute service that helps one begin their day with a spiritual connection. They also have unique services that celebrate holidays such as Hanukkah, Passover, and Purim.

The Tifereth even offers assistance to members of the synagogue who want to get married. The Rabbi is willing to officiate people and host Aufruf, which is a pre-wedding Torah celebration for the couple. They even offer help for preparing for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah for children of age. They also let adults have Bar or Bat Mitzvahs if they missed out on one when they were a child.

The Tifereth Israel Synagogue is a place where everyone is welcome to worship, engage in the Jewish community, and find their place. It is family-friendly and combines new and old ideas so that everyone will find something special.
