Student Testimonial

In 2001, two Lutheran congregations joined together to form Capitol Hill Lutheran Church (CHLC). These two congregations provided solace and services to refugees as early as the 1950s. In line with the rich history of its predecessors, CHLC continues to support immigrants and other marginalized members of the Des Moines community.

In partnership with Lutheran Services of Iowa, CHLC offers weekly English language classes, offers worship in two languages, and hosts a Bible study in a third. Their traditional service is on Sundays at 10 AM and is in English. Their congregation is diverse and inclusive which they believe reflects the diversity found in God’s creation. No matter one’s race, ability, gender identity, age, culture, sexual orientation, additions, etc. CHLC welcomes everyone.

CHLC hosts a variety of bible studies including women’s, young adults, and men’s groups. As a multi-generational congregation with several families, there are also several groups of children that are split up by age.

As an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) congregation, CHLC is committed to “the gospel message of Christ’s love and justice for all.” Building upon their rich history of supporting immigrants this congregation uplifts the LGBTQIA+ community and pushes for anti-racism. Additionally, the congregation runs a clothes closet that is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays, makes and delivers burritos to the homeless community on Thursdays, and has an active social justice committee.
