Student Testimonial

Highland Park Christian Church (HPCC) doesn’t beat around the bush when it comes to its feelings on members of the LGBTQ+ community. When they say, “All are welcome” they mean all. A page on their website dedicated to the topic reads, “Whoever you are, wherever you are on life’s journey, as God’s beloved, ALL are worthy and welcome!”

Their directness on the matter can be refreshing to some as many Christian denominations and independent churches will use the same language (all are welcome) when they don’t mean all. HPPC’s stance on this topic isn’t surprising though. HPCC is a Disciples of Christ church and, as a denomination, is one of the few North American-based organizations that openly welcomes members of the LGBTQ+ community.

In addition to being an open and affirming congregation, HPCC provides numerous community services, ministries, and opportunities for worship. On Sundays, they host three different opportunities for worship. The two earliest sessions are in line with their theology (one is in Swahili and the other is in English), but the afternoon session is managed by the MooSoThaw Karen Baptist church.

On Thursdays, the church hosts a meal that anyone can join at no cost. That meal runs from 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM. On the first Thursday of each month, this meal overlaps with their Clothes Closet where folx, regardless of their affiliation with the church, can grab shoes, clothes, coats, etc. for all ages, sizes, and genders. This clothes closet is also open from 10:00 AM to noon every Monday and Friday. Lastly, twice a month on the second and fourth Thursdays from 4:00 – 6:00 PM HPCC hosts one of DMARC’s (the Des Moines Area Religious Council) Mobile Food Pantries
